"How I Met You Mother", Season 1; Ep. 3

In this Episode, Ted and Barney's friendship becomes closer. Ted goes along with Barney's idea of trying to pick up girls at the airport, which leads them to follow two girls to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Meanwhile Lily and Robin have a "girls night out", where Robin gets hit on continuously throughout the night and brings out some of Lily's insecurities concerning her self-esteem/ appearance. And Marshall spends the whole night studying until he gets a call from Barney to come on the adventure, and meet him and Ted in PA. Ted and Barney's adventure leads them too kiss the Liberty Bell.
The major themes that I saw through out this Episode are Adventure, Story, and Jealousy. The theme of Adventure is seen through Ted and Barney's adventure to Philadelphia. Ted followed Barney on a whime to follow these two, thought to be "single women", and it turned out they got the opportunity to kiss the Liberty Bell which was probably never done before and "Legendary". The theme of Story, is found as the whole point of "How I Met Your Mother", but it is also emphasized in the cab ride home between Barney and Ted. Ted admits that in following Barney, he not only got to kiss the Liberty Bell but he got to create good memories with a friend and to be able to tells such a great story. Another theme I saw was Jealousy. When Lily and Robin are hanging out at the bar, Robin gets hit on by these guys and no one even notices Lily. She thinks it is because of her engagement ring, which she takes off because Marshall tells her it would be ok. Upon doing so, Marshall finds out when he talks to Robin. He goes to the bar and confronts the man Lily is talking to not knowing that he was not interested in her. Marshall lands up hugging the man and his partner acts Marshall because he is also jealous.
I think that, "How I Met Your Mother" is an good example of story telling. From a Christian perspective reahing the Bible should be like reading a story. The Gospel is the story of Jesus' life and ministry. Everyone has a story, a life story and in this generation story is important. People long to know other people, to relate to them and to get to know each other.

  1. Great summary and identification of themes, but please try to use specific biblical texts to support your thoughts.
